Positive Cycles

Who we are, what we do & who we help

Positive Cycles started in April 2015 as a community-based project delivering affordable bikes to local people.  Since then the project has grown and grown with the fundamentals of recycling and encouraging more people to take up cycling remaining strong.

We take old bikes, clean them up and then our volunteers and groups of young people fix them, gaining AQA qualifications in the process. The newly-refurbished bikes are then donated to local families, used in conjunction with the Transport for Greater Manchester “Bike to Work” scheme or sold with all profits being churned directly back into the Positive Cycles project to buy better equipment and parts.

The workshop is also used by the Oldham Youth Justice Service as part of the unpaid community work of young offenders.  The young people are involved in cleaning and fixing donated bikes and making sure they are roadworthy and ready to be resold.  In doing this they gain valuable experience and qualifications.

We also offer AQA-accredited Bike Maintenance courses to individuals and groups.

Positive Cycles now has a shop-front location in Oldham Town Centre where you can browse bikes for sale, hire manual or electric bikes, get your bike serviced and drop off old bikes for recycling.

If you would like to donate an old bike, purchase a refurbished bike or find out more about our AQA Bike Maintenance courses please get in touch.

By donating an old and unused bike to Positive Cycles, you are giving nit a second life.  We will clean it, fix it, make it roadworthy again.  It will then either be donated to a local jobseeker, a local family or sold at a discounted rate in our Positive Cycles Community Bike Shop.

So check your sheds and garages, if you are about to buy a new bike then consider what you are doing with your old one.  Get in touch and we will come and pick it up.

Bike Back to Work

Positive Cycles are proud to be working with Transport for Greater Manchester in helping people into employment via the “Bike Back to Work” scheme.

What do you need to do?  Talk to your Jobcentre Plus advisor. They have all the details of how to apply for a recycled bike, and can check if you’re eligible.

Then it’s simply the case of filling in an application form and returning it to TfGM. If you are successful, you’ll be matched with one of the TfGM recycling partners and your new bike.  Even better, bikes will be supplied with accessories and safety equipment such as lights and helmets.

Further information can be obtained from TfGM or from your Jobcentre Plus Adviser.
